Pokémon Company Unveils Generation 10 Games: Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves
During a 30th-anniversary Pokémon Presents livestream, The Pokémon Company officially announced the next mainline games in the franchise: Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves. These titles mark the beginning of Generation 10, introducing a new region and a fresh trio of starter Pokémon.
The games are set in a previously unseen region comprised of a central island chain surrounded by a vast sea. This environment is designed to emphasize open-water exploration and a tropical aesthetic, distinguishing it from previous settings. Alongside the core announcement, special tropical-themed variants of Pikachu were also revealed.
The immediate focus of the reveal, however, was the introduction of the three new starter Pokémon, which will be players’ initial companions in the region.
The grass-type starter is Browt, a small, round avian Pokémon. It is characterized by its prominent, arched eyebrows and a generally stoic or perturbed expression.
The fire-type starter is Pombon, a canine Pokémon resembling a Pomeranian. Its design features fluffy fur and a flame-like tuft, aligning with the fire-type lineage of previous fire-dog starters like Growlithe and Cyndaquil.
The water-type starter is Gecqua, a lizard-like Pokémon with notably large eyes and long lashes. Its pose and expression convey a distinct sense of confidence.
These starter designs have historically driven significant fan discussion and merchandise appeal for each new generation. The tropical setting and the new starters represent the next evolution of the core Pokémon RPG formula, which began with Pokémon Red and Green in 1996.
Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are scheduled for release later this year, concluding a three-decade legacy of periodic new generations that refresh the franchise with novel creatures, regions, and gameplay mechanics. The announcement confirms the ongoing development pipeline for the flagship series.
