The United Nations leadership has strongly condemned the recent military exchanges between Israel, the United States, and Iran, warning of severe risks to regional and international peace and security.
The violence began with reported joint Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iran, described as targeting military sites and regime leadership. Iran subsequently launched a wave of drones and missiles toward Israel and Gulf region countries, with explosions reported in those areas.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a clear statement denouncing the escalation. “I condemn today’s military escalation in the Middle East,” he said. “The use of force by the United States and Israel against Iran, and the subsequent retaliation by Iran across the region, undermine international peace and security.” He recalled that all UN member states are obligated to respect international law, citing the UN Charter’s prohibition on the threat or use of force against any state’s territorial integrity or political independence.
The Secretary-General called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and de-escalation, cautioning that failure could trigger a wider regional conflict with “grave consequences for civilians and regional stability.” He urged all parties to return to negotiations, reiterating that “there is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes.”
Senior UN officials echoed this demand. Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, stated that bombs and missiles “only result in death, destruction and human misery,” with civilians paying the “ultimate price.” He warned that a wider conflict would cause further civilian deaths and “destruction on a potentially unimaginable scale, not just in Iran but across the Middle East region.”
World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed deep trouble over the situation, urging leaders to “choose the challenging path of dialogue over the senseless route of destruction.”
These condemnations coincide with an emergency Security Council meeting convened at the UN headquarters in New York. The session, called by French President Emmanuel Macron, is discussing the attacks and the dangerous cycle of retaliation.
The UN’s unified stance underscores the international community’s fear that the direct military confrontation between long-standing adversaries could spiral beyond existing proxy conflicts, destabilizing a region already burdened by war and humanitarian crises. The immediate focus remains on preventing further escalation and reviving diplomatic channels to avert a broader war.
