Helicopter Crash in Kenya Kills Six, Including MP Johana Ng’eno

A helicopter crash in western Kenya on Saturday resulted in the deaths of six people, including a sitting member of parliament, police confirmed. The aircraft went down shortly after takeoff in Nandi County, a hilly region, and caught fire upon impact.

According to Kenya Police Chief Samuel Mukuusi, the incident occurred in the afternoon. The helicopter, carrying all six occupants, crashed minutes after departing from an airstrip in the area. Mukuusi stated that adverse weather conditions were a likely factor, describing it as “bad weather.” Emergency responders recovered the bodies from the burnt wreckage. Among the deceased was identified as Johana Ng’eno, 54, the Member of Parliament for Kipkelion West Constituency.

The parliamentarian was a veteran lawmaker serving his third term after being re-elected in the 2022 general election on a ticket from the ruling party, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula issued a statement mourning Ng’eno, calling him “a devoted legislator and a committed servant of the people.” Colleagues across the political spectrum have begun paying tribute to his contributions.

An official investigation into the precise cause of the crash is now underway, led by aviation authorities and police. Kenya’s Civil Aviation Authority has not yet released a formal statement on the accident. The investigation will likely focus on mechanical integrity, pilot decision-making, and the reported poor weather conditions at the time of takeoff.

Helicopter accidents in Kenya, while relatively infrequent, have occurred before, often involving challenging terrain or meteorological factors. The death of a sitting MP adds a layer of national significance to the tragedy, prompting calls for a thorough and transparent inquiry. Ng’eno’s constituency will now face an unexpected by-election, a process that will be managed by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The immediate next step involves the formal identification of all victims and the completion of post-mortem examinations. The investigative report from the aviation authority and police will be critical in determining accountability and any necessary safety recommendations to prevent future occurrences. This incident underscores the risks associated with air travel in regions with variable topography and weather, even on short domestic flights.
