Zamfara Governor Ties Political Future to PDP Court Ruling
Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has stated that his continued membership in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) depends on the outcome of a pending Court of Appeal judgment concerning the party’s national leadership crisis. The governor announced this position during a meeting with PDP stakeholders at the Government House in Gusau.
The central legal dispute involves the legitimacy of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki’s leadership of the PDP and the validity of the party’s national convention held in Ibadan. A statement from Governor Lawal’s Special Adviser on Media, Mustapha Jafaru Kaura, explained that the governor’s stance is directly linked to the appellate court’s imminent decision on these matters.
The stakeholders’ meeting, which drew representatives from all 14 local government areas in Zamfara, was convened in response to new guidelines from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). These guidelines require political parties to conclude all internal congresses at least 300 days before the 2027 general elections, setting a deadline around April or May 2026.
Kaura highlighted the紧迫 timing, noting that ongoing litigation at the PDP’s national level creates significant uncertainty. “If we remain without exploring options, we may face uncertainty and others may take the credit,” he said, paraphrasing the governor’s concerns. He added that opinions among party members are divided on potential alternatives should the court ruling be unfavorable, with some favoring the All Progressives Congress (APC), others the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and some advocating for the formation of an entirely new political platform.
Governor Lawal emphasized the necessity for a clear and legally recognized party leadership structure, asserting that the Court of Appeal’s verdict will be the decisive factor in determining his subsequent political strategy.
The governor’s position underscores the high stakes of the PDP’s internal legal battles for state-level politicians. The ruling will not only resolve a prolonged factional dispute within one of Nigeria’s major parties but will also trigger immediate strategic calculations for key figures like Lawal as the 2027 election cycle formally begins.
