Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has forecast an all-English Champions League final this season, tipping Arsenal to face Manchester City in the showdown. Cole shared his prediction on The Dressing Room podcast, expressing confidence in Arsenal’s progression while acknowledging the tougher challenge ahead for the reigning champions.
Arsenal have commenced their Champions League campaign with flawless intent, winning all six of their group-stage matches. Their reward is a last-16 tie against Bayer Leverkusen, a side they have previously faced in European competition. Cole suggests this draw presents a clearer route to the later stages for Mikel Arteta’s side, stating his “only bet would be Arsenal going to the final.”
In contrast, Manchester City’s path is considerably more formidable. The Premier League leaders were drawn against 14-time winners Real Madrid in the last 16, a repeat of last season’s semi-final encounter. Cole noted the difficulty, remarking, “With Manchester City, you still don’t know, because there’s too many good teams,” referencing the depth of elite contenders in this season’s competition.
Both clubs are among the favourites for the European title. Arsenal are seeking their first Champions League trophy, having last reached the final in 2006. Manchester City, under Pep Guardiola, are the defending champions and have established themselves as consistent contenders in recent years. Their domestic form remains strong, with both teams performing well in the Premier League.
The Champions League last-16 first legs commence in February 2024, with the final scheduled for June 1 at Wembley Stadium in London. An Arsenal versus Manchester City final would represent a significant domestic showdown on Europe’s premier club stage. Cole’s prediction highlights the anticipation building around England’s top two sides as they prepare for the decisive knockout phases.
