Enugu APC Elects New State Leadership, Governor Mbah Touts Benefits of Ruling Party Alliance

The Enugu State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has inaugurated a new 37-member state executive committee following a state congress held in Enugu. Dr. Martin Chukwunweike and Hon. Chukwudi Nnadozie were unanimously elected as State Chairman and Secretary, respectively. The exercise, overseen by a national APC panel, was declared free, fair, and credible. The new executive includes 15 zonal officers, with five representatives from each of the state’s three senatorial districts.

The congress was attended by Governor Peter Mbah, who used the platform to commend the peaceful conduct of the exercise and to highlight the advantages of Enugu State’s alignment with the ruling APC at the national level. Governor Mbah credited President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies with increasing revenue allocations to states, which he said is fuelling development projects in Enugu.

Mbah pointed to specific federal approvals secured for the state, including the concession of the Enugu international airport and cargo terminal to a private investor, planned upgrades to the railway line terminating in Aba, and the establishment of the South East Development Commission. He also noted a planned high-pressure gas pipeline project. The governor asserted that these initiatives position Enugu to become a major aviation and multimodal transport hub.

“The bold and courageous policies that Mr. President initiated at the centre have allowed more funds to flow to the subnationals,” Mbah stated, linking national macroeconomic improvements, such as stabilising foreign exchange and growing reserves, to state-level development.

In his acceptance speech, Chairman-elect Chukwunweike pledged the new executive’s commitment to securing re-election for Governor Mbah and President Tinubu. Outgoing Caretaker Committee Chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye, praised Governor Mbah for uniting former members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and APC loyalists into a cohesive party structure.

National APC Deputy Chairman (South), Chief Emma Enukwu, urged the new leadership to focus on vote mobilization ahead of future elections. The five-man national panel that supervised the congress also lauded the process and commended Governor Mbah for the state’s noted cleanliness and transformation.

The inauguration solidifies the APC’s organizational structure in Enugu State, a region historically dominated by the opposition PDP, and underscores the governor’s strategy of aligning state politics with the federal government for perceived developmental gains. The new executive’s primary task will be to consolidate this alliance and deliver electoral victories for the party.
