Ras Tanura Refinery Drone Attack Intercepted by Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia’s defence ministry said it intercepted a drone targeting the Ras Tanura oil refinery on Wednesday, an attack that follows an earlier incident at the same facility earlier in the week. In a statement posted on the social media platform X, the ministry reported that initial assessments confirmed the aerial vehicle was shot down and caused no damage to the critical infrastructure.

Separately, operations at the Ras Tanura complex were partially suspended on Monday after an attack sparked a fire at the site. Located on Saudi Arabia’s eastern Gulf coast, Ras Tanura is one of the Middle East’s largest refineries and a vital component of the kingdom’s energy sector, with a processing capacity of 550,000 barrels per day.

The attacks come amid heightened tensions in the region. Gulf Arab states have repeatedly accused Iran of orchestrating strikes on energy installations across the region. These accusations have intensified following extensive US and Israeli air campaigns against Iranian targets, during which Tehran has launched missile and drone barrages at neighboring countries.

The Ras Tanura facility, operated by Saudi Aramco, is a cornerstone of global oil supply chains. Its security is closely watched by international markets. While Wednesday’s interception prevented physical harm to the plant, the sequence of attacks underscores the persistent threat to critical energy infrastructure in the Gulf. Saudi authorities have not yet attributed responsibility for either incident, but the pattern aligns with broader regional hostilities involving Iran and its allies. The situation remains a key focus for energy security analysts monitoring stability in the world’s most important oil-producing region.
