INEC Leverages NAF Logistics for 2027 General Elections

INEC and Nigerian Air Force Explore Logistics Partnership for 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has welcomed a proposed partnership with the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to address persistent logistical challenges for the 2027 general elections. The collaboration aims to enhance the transport and delivery of election materials across the country.

The discussion followed a courtesy visit by NAF officials to INEC’s headquarters in Abuja, where the Air Force offered to provide logistical support and join other security agencies in ensuring security during the polls. INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, expressed optimism about the potential of military logistics to resolve long-standing operational hurdles.

“An election can only be as good as its logistics. Given the fact that we have always encountered logistics problems, it has dawned on me that maybe INEC has not properly exploited this great potential we have in the military logistics,” Amupitan stated. He noted that recent private discussions with NAF clarified how their assets and expertise could be applied effectively.

While security for elections is typically coordinated through a multi-agency framework involving the police and other forces, the specific offer of direct logistical assistance from NAF represents a notable expansion of potential support. INEC has historically faced criticism for delays in the deployment of personnel and materials, particularly to remote areas, which can disrupt voting timelines.

Amupitan confirmed INEC’s readiness to formalize the cooperation. “We will be glad to work with you and see how we can overcome some of the challenges we’ve had with logistics,” he said, extending the intent to collaborate with other branches of the armed forces. The initiative is framed as a pragmatic step to leverage existing national infrastructure for electoral efficiency.

The move underscores INEC’s proactive approach to mitigating operational risks ahead of the 2027 polls. Successful integration of NAF’s air and land transport capabilities could significantly improve the punctuality and reach of election logistics, a critical factor for credible voting. Details of the proposed framework, including terms of engagement and resource allocation, are expected to be developed in subsequent joint meetings between INEC and military planners.

This potential partnership highlights a broader trend of electoral bodies seeking specialized support from state institutions to strengthen electoral administration. For Nigeria, ensuring smooth logistics remains central to public confidence in the voting process and the peaceful transfer of power.
