PDP Sets 2026 Convention Date, Wike Urges Unity

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced that its next National Convention will be held on March 29 and 30, 2026. This decision was formalized during the party’s 106th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which convened in Abuja on Wednesday.

The convention, a critical event for the opposition party, will be used to elect new national leadership and set the party’s direction ahead of the 2027 general elections. The timing and logistics of the 2026 gathering were key agenda items for the NEC, which serves as the PDP’s highest decision-making body between conventions.

In his remarks at the meeting, former Rivers State Governor and prominent party figure, Nyesom Wike, stressed the urgency of internal healing. He argued that the party must prioritize sincere reconciliation among its various factions to present a unified front. “In life there comes a period when we have a crisis, but that crisis is for you to put yourself in order,” Wike stated. “What is happening is a gradual process, for me it must be sincere reconciliation.”

Wike’s intervention highlights the persistent internal tensions that have affected the PDP since its defeat in the 2023 presidential election. The party, which governed Nigeria for 16 years until 2015, has been grappling with divergent interests among its prominent leaders, particularly those who served in the previous administration and newer stakeholders. This friction has been evident in recent electoral campaigns and internal party disputes.

The call for reconciliation comes as the PDP prepares for a crucial period. The 2026 National Convention will be the first major test of the party’s ability to manage its internal dynamics and project cohesion. The outcome of the leadership elections will significantly influence the party’s strategy, candidate selection, and overall strength for the next electoral cycle.

Analysts note that the successful management of this convention could determine the PDP’s viability as a formidable alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). A transparent and unifying convention is seen as essential to rebuilding public trust and mobilizing a fragmented opposition. The party’s ability to implement a genuine reconciliation process in the coming months will be closely watched by both observers and its membership across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. The March 2026 date now provides a fixed timeline for these internal efforts to coalesce.
