MSC, Nigerdock Sign 45-Year Nigeria Container Terminal Deal

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has signed a 45-year sub-concession agreement with Nigerdock to develop, operate, and maintain a new dedicated container terminal within the Snake Island Port in Lagos, Nigeria. The deal, announced by Nigerdock’s Chief Marketing Officer Kevin Johnson-Azuara, marks a major expansion of port infrastructure in West Africa.

The exclusive container terminal will span 30 hectares on Snake Island, an 85-hectare integrated port and free zone facility operated by Nigerdock. Scheduled for completion by 2028, the terminal will feature a 910-meter quay, six ship-to-shore cranes, two ship berths, three barge berths, and a draft of up to 18 meters to accommodate large vessels.

Nigerdock CEO Maher Jarmakani described the partnership as a step toward creating a world-class facility that provides MSC with a strategic “home” in Nigeria and attracts significant foreign direct investment to bolster the national maritime and logistics sector.

MSC President Diego Aponte stated the project underscores the shipping group’s long-term commitment to Nigeria and Africa. He noted the terminal will enhance efficiency, create local jobs, and increase economic resilience, aligning with MSC’s broader strategy to support importers and exporters across the continent.

Snake Island Port, which includes three terminals, has already helped alleviate capacity constraints at the busier Lagos Port Complex. Nigerdock, a Nigerian maritime and logistics firm, operates the port and adjacent free zone, facilitating trade connections to global markets.

MSC, headquartered in Geneva, is one of the world’s largest container shipping lines, with a presence in over 150 countries. The company has served African trade routes since 1971 and maintains a network of local offices across more than 45 African nations, combined with road and rail solutions.

The terminal development is poised to elevate Snake Island Port’s status as a regional shipping hub, strengthening Nigeria’s position in global supply chains while supporting MSC’s integrated service offering for African customers.
