Trump Raises Safety Concerns Over Iran in 2026 World Cup

US President Donald Trump has questioned the appropriateness of Iran’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, citing safety concerns for the Iranian national team amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. His remarks contradict earlier assurances from FIFA President Gianni Infantino that the team would be permitted to compete.

Trump stated on social media that while the Iranian team would technically be welcome at the tournament, their presence could pose risks. “Iran’s national soccer team is welcome to the World Cup, but I don’t believe it would be appropriate for their own life and safety,” he said. This position appears at odds with comments Infantino made earlier in the week, in which he relayed that Trump had guaranteed Iranian players and staff would be allowed to attend the event.

The 2026 World Cup, set to run from June 11 to July 19, will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, featuring an expanded field of 48 teams. Iran has qualified for the tournament and is scheduled to play group-stage matches in cities including Inglewood and Seattle. Despite a US travel ban that restricts entry for Iranian citizens, athletes and team officials are exempt from these limitations, ensuring the squad remains eligible to travel to the United States for the competition.

The president’s comments emerge as the US, Israel, and Iran continue to navigate an escalating conflict that began in late February. The heightened diplomatic and military tensions have raised broader questions about security and international relations in the lead-up to the global sporting event.

FIFA has consistently maintained that the World Cup must remain a platform for unity and that all qualified teams should be able to participate without hindrance. The organization is expected to continue coordinating with US authorities to ensure safe passage for all participating nations.

The situation highlights the complex intersection of geopolitics and international sport. While the tournament’s hosting nations are responsible for security and visa protocols, the participation of teams from regions of conflict can draw global attention beyond the field of play. The final arrangements for Iran’s delegation will likely depend on bilateral assurances and the evolving diplomatic climate in the months before the tournament begins.

Should the Iranian team compete, their presence will test the host nations’ capacity to separate athletic competition from political disputes. The episode underscores the enduring challenge of safeguarding the apolitical ideals of global sporting events amid real-world tensions.
