PDP Benue Overcomes Crisis, Aims for 2027 Election Success

Benue PDP Rebrands for 2027 After Internal Crisis Resolution

The Benue State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has commenced a repositioning strategy following the resolution of a prolonged internal crisis, holding an expanded caucus meeting in Makurdi to outline its plan for the 2027 elections.

The meeting, attended by key leaders and stakeholders, focused on party unity and electoral preparation. Ex-Governor Samuel Ortom, the state PDP leader, announced that the party’s internal fragmentation, which resulted in legal disputes, is now settled. He cited a recent Court of Appeal judgment that affirmed the legitimacy of the Abdurahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu-led national caretaker committee, a position also recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Ortom detailed the party’s operational timeline, stating that a digital membership registration exercise will commence on March 16, 2026, for a two-week period. The resulting electronic register will subsequently be submitted to INEC, a critical step for certifying the party’s structure for the polls. He expressed confidence that the resolved litigation places the Benue PDP on a strong footing to win the 2027 governorship election.

The caucus also featured sharp political criticism of the incumbent administration. Senate Minority Leader Dr. Abba Moro argued that the state is poorly governed, stating the current governor has failed in the primary duty of ensuring public security and has neglected the entire Idoma zone. Moro framed the 2027 contest as a collective necessity for Benue, not a personal or ethnic contest, and dismissed the influence of the pro-governor “No Alia, No Benue” movement, noting that the governor is not indispensable.

State PDP Chairman Rt. Hon. Ezekiel Adaji acknowledged strategic engagements with opposition figures from the All Progressives Congress (APC) as part of a broader coalition to “rescue Benue.” He also condemned a recent physical attack on the party’s media consultant, Chief Bemgba Iortyom, and reiterated calls for the state government to uphold its constitutional responsibility for citizen protection.

The meeting underscores the PDP’s intent to present a consolidated front in Benue State. With its internal legal challenges quashed and a formal re-registration process scheduled, the party is mobilizing around a platform of opposition to the current administration, setting the stage for a competitive 2027 electoral cycle. The successful execution of the e-registration and the durability of any opposition coalition will be closely watched as key indicators of its viability.
