NEMA Concludes Emergency Response After Jos Terminus Fire

A fire that broke out at the Jos Terminus Market in Nigeria’s Plateau State has been contained following a coordinated emergency response, with no fatalities reported, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed.

The incident occurred shortly before 10 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2026, in a section of the market located in Jos North Local Government Area. Emergency responders, including the Federal and Plateau State Fire Services, successfully extinguished the blaze, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the major trading hub.

A joint assessment by NEMA and other response agencies indicated that several temporary stalls and lock-up shops were partially or completely destroyed. Preliminary findings suggest a power surge may have triggered the fire. The swift deployment of fire engines and personnel was credited with limiting the overall damage.

Bintu Wana, Head of NEMA’s Jos Operations Office, who led the on-ground operation, conveyed the sympathy of the agency’s Director-General, Zubaida Umar, to affected traders. “The Director-General extends her condolences to the market leadership and traders, particularly those who lost their shops and sources of livelihood,” a NEMA statement read.

The multi-agency response involved the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency, Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and Nigerian Red Cross Society. Community efforts were also supported by vigilante groups, market authorities, traders’ associations, and local volunteers.

Plateau State Government officials and market leaders praised the coordinated intervention, noting that the rapid response was instrumental in averting a larger catastrophe. Assessments are ongoing to determine the full economic impact and coordinate support for displaced traders.

The incident underscores the importance of robust emergency protocols in bustling commercial areas. Authorities continue to investigate the exact cause while advising on electrical safety measures to prevent future occurrences.
