Nairobi Urges Riparian Relocation After Fatal Collapse

Nairobi Building Collapse Claims Four Lives, Renews Focus on Riparian Zone Risks

A building collapse in Nairobi’s Shauri Moyo area has killed four people and injured several others, prompting city authorities to reiterate warnings about the dangers of settling in riparian zones.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at the Blue Estate, located along the Nairobi River in Kamukunji Sub-County. Preliminary investigations indicate that the victims were inside the abandoned structure salvaging steel bars and other construction materials when it gave way.

Rescue operations involved multiple agencies, including the Nairobi City County Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team, firefighters, the National Disaster Management Unit, the Kenya Defence Forces Disaster Response Battalion, and the Kenya Red Cross. Two male victims were rescued and transported to Kenyatta National Hospital for treatment, while two others received first aid at the scene. The bodies of four unidentified males were later recovered from the rubble and handed over to the police.

The collapsed building was part of a cluster of structures marked for removal under the Nairobi River Regeneration Programme, a city-led initiative aimed at restoring the river’s ecological corridor. Following the disaster, the site has been secured and handed over to the Kamukunji Assistant County Commissioner. Authorities have cordoned off the area due to structural instability, with an adjacent building also showing signs of potential failure.

Nairobi City County, through its Department of Urban Development and Planning, has issued a stern advisory to all residents living along riverbanks and riparian areas. The county stresses the critical need for immediate voluntary relocation from these high-risk zones, particularly amid the current heavy rainy season that has elevated water levels in multiple city rivers.

The tragedy underscores the persistent hazards of informal and unauthorised construction within environmentally sensitive areas. City officials maintain that the Regeneration Programme remains essential for public safety and environmental sustainability, and they urge compliance with relocation directives to prevent future incidents.
