Nigerian Army Steps Up Maiduguri Ops After Suicide Attacks

Nigerian security forces have launched an intensified operation in Maiduguri, Borno State, following a series of coordinated suicide bomb attacks on the city on Monday evening. The attacks, which targeted crowded public areas, have prompted a major response from military and emergency services.

According to a statement from the Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation Hadin Kai, the explosions occurred at approximately 7:05 p.m. The assailants, believed to be affiliated with the terrorist group Boko Haram, used improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Multiple suicide bombers are suspected to have been deployed simultaneously. The blast sites included the Post Office area, the Maiduguri Monday Market, and the entrance to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

The military confirmed the timing of the attacks coincided with the period of Iftar, the evening meal breaking the Ramadan fast, a choice described as an attempt to maximize casualties and spread panic among residents.

In immediate response, troops from Operation Hadin Kai, alongside the Nigeria Police Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit and other security agencies, rapidly secured and cordoned off all affected locations. Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and medical teams, evacuated the injured to hospitals for treatment. Rescue and recovery operations continued at the scenes into Tuesday.

The statement revealed that preliminary intelligence indicated the possibility of further operatives within the metropolis. Consequently, security forces have heightened surveillance, patrols, and counter-IED measures across Maiduguri to locate any remaining suspects and deter additional attacks. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, to avoid crowded places where feasible, and to report any suspicious activities or objects promptly to security agencies.

The military extended condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property while pursuing those responsible for the袭击.

This incident underscores the persistent security challenge in Borno State, the epicenter of the long-running Boko Haram insurgency. Despite the territorial defeats inflicted on the terrorist group in recent years, it retains the capability to launch asymmetric attacks on soft targets, maintaining a climate of fear in the region. The swift, multi-agency response highlights the ongoing, concerted effort to mitigate such threats in northeastern Nigeria. The international community continues to watch the region’s stability closely as the national security apparatus works to prevent a resurgence in large-scale violence.
