The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed on Wednesday that Iranian authorities reported a projectile strike on the premises of the Bushehr nuclear power plant, stating the incident caused no damage or injuries. The Vienna-based agency relayed that the impact occurred on Tuesday evening at Iran’s only operational nuclear power reactor.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi reiterated a call for heightened restraint in the region to prevent any nuclear accident, the agency said in its statement. The Bushehr plant, located in southwestern Iran, has housed the Islamic Republic’s sole commercial nuclear reactor since it was first connected to the national grid in 2011.

This incident occurs against a backdrop of heightened tensions following recent military exchanges between Iran and Israel, and the ongoing impact of stringent U.S. sanctions. Those sanctions were reinstated in 2018 after Washington withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the nuclear deal that provided Iran with sanctions relief in exchange for verifiable limits on its nuclear activities. Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear program is exclusively for peaceful purposes, such as power generation and medical isotopes, and has denied any intention to develop nuclear weapons.

The IAEA, which monitors Iran’s compliance with its safeguards agreement and the now-suspended JCPOA, emphasized that the plant’s safety and security systems remained intact. The agency underscores that any military action near nuclear facilities carries inherent risks, regardless of immediate outcomes. The situation remains under review, with the IAEA continuing its verification activities in Iran amid the fragile regional security environment.
