Katsina Bandits Reprisal After Vigilante Clash Kills 18

A clash between a local vigilante group and individuals described as “repentant bandits” in northwest Nigeria’s Katsina State triggered a reprisal attack that left 18 people dead, state authorities confirmed.

The incident occurred on Tuesday in Falale and Kadobe villages within the Jibia Local Government Area. According to Nasir Muazu, the Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, members of a community vigilante group engaged the former bandits in a gunfight, resulting in the deaths of three suspects.

This initial confrontation prompted a violent reprisal by suspected bandits on the surrounding communities. Commissioner Muazu stated that this secondary attack caused an additional 15 fatalities, bringing the total death toll to 18. The sequence of events aligns with earlier media reports that had initially cited at least 15 deaths.

Security forces, including personnel from the police, the State Security Service (SSS), Civilian JTF (C-Watch), and community leaders, launched a joint operation to contain the violence. Muazu confirmed that the coordinated response prevented further loss of life and restored calm to the affected villages.

In a statement, the commissioner appealed for residents to remain peaceful and allow investigators to complete their work. He acknowledged the grief of affected families and assured that the state government, under Governor Dikko Radda, is committed to securing lives and property. “Nothing will distract us from our commitment to secure lives and property. We will remain resolute in our efforts,” the statement read.

Katsina State, like several regions in Nigeria’s northwest, has long struggled with armed banditry, involving criminal gangs that carry out kidnappings, raids, and killings. The involvement of community vigilante groups, often formed for self-defence, has become a feature of the conflict, sometimes leading to escalations with former combatants or criminal elements. This incident underscores the volatile security dynamics in the region and the challenges of managing localized conflicts that can rapidly spiral into wider violence. Authorities have urged cooperation as investigations continue.
