Nigeria Coventry University Partnership for Affordable Degrees

The Federal Government of Nigeria has formalised a partnership with the United Kingdom’s Coventry University to establish a transnational campus in Lagos, marking a significant step to expand access to internationally accredited education within the country.

Announced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the initiative will see Coventry University Nigeria operate within Alaro City, Lagos State. The campus is slated to begin admissions between the third and fourth quarters of 2026, pending final regulatory approvals from Nigerian authorities.

The new institution will deliver undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in high-demand fields, including Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM), Business, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). A central feature of the arrangement is that all degrees awarded will be directly equivalent to those conferred by Coventry University in the UK, ensuring international recognition for graduates.

Dr. Alausa, who made the disclosure from the UK where he is accompanying President Bola Tinubu, stated that the project is designed to address critical gaps in Nigeria’s education and skills landscape. “This partnership is strategically aligned to provide world-class education at a significantly reduced cost for Nigerian students,” he said. “It allows them to obtain a UK-accredited degree without travelling abroad, thereby strengthening local skills development and enhancing graduate employability.”

The Transnational Education (TNE) model is supported by the UK’s Department for Business and Trade, reflecting broader bilateral cooperation aims. For Nigeria, the campus represents a key component of the government’s strategy to develop a knowledge-based economy and position the country as a regional hub for higher learning and innovation.

The move is expected to attract substantial investment into Nigeria’s education sector and create academic and administrative job opportunities. It also responds to persistent challenges of limited university placements and the high cost associated with studying overseas for many Nigerian families.

With regulatory processes now the main remaining hurdle, the establishment of Coventry University Nigeria signals a tangible shift towards leveraging international partnerships to build domestic capacity. The initiative aims to produce graduates equipped with practical, industry-relevant skills, directly contributing to national development goals and the growing demand for a competitive, tech-savvy workforce.
