World Bank Visits NEMA for Nigeria Disaster Preparedness

A technical team from the World Bank Group visited Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Tuesday to review joint efforts and identify ways to strengthen national disaster preparedness and response capabilities. The meeting, held at NEMA’s headquarters in Abuja, reflects a renewed focus on building resilience against increasingly frequent climate-related and other hazards across the country.

The World Bank delegation was led by Francis Nkoka, while NEMA’s Director General, Zubaida Umar, hosted the discussions. According to a statement from NEMA’s official X account, the engagement centered on assessing ongoing collaborative projects and exploring strategic enhancements to the nation’s disaster risk management framework. A key priority was identifying methods to better equip local communities for emergency situations, moving from reactive response to proactive prevention and preparation.

“The engagement reaffirmed the shared commitment to strengthening disaster risk management systems and enhancing the country’s capacity to effectively prevent, prepare for, and respond
