Mr. Jollof Slams Ozoro Rape Festival, Calls for Delta Action

A viral video showing women being assaulted and harassed during a festival in Ozoro, Delta State, Nigeria, has prompted arrests and widespread condemnation. The footage, which circulated online, depicts women struggling against groups of men with audible cries for help, leading to allegations of sexual violence at the event, locally referred to as the ‘rape festival’ incident.

In response to the public outcry, the Delta State Police Command confirmed the arrest of Chief Omorede Sunday, identified as the alleged organizer, along with four other individuals. Commissioner of Police Aina Adesola strongly condemned the acts, describing them as “criminal, inhumane, and a grave violation of fundamental human rights.” The police emphasized that such behavior will be prosecuted under Nigerian law, which prohibits sexual assault and harassment.

The reaction extended to prominent comedian and actor Freedom Atsepoyi, widely known as Mr Jollof. In an Instagram post, he expressed deep disappointment, stating, “I feel so ashamed as a Deltan in 2026 if such attitude to disrespect women still exists.” He highlighted the timing, noting the incident occurred during Women’s Month, which includes International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day, calling the events “barbaric.” Mr Jollof urged the Delta State government to take immediate action, saying, “I am calling on the Delta State government to speak up and hold those responsible accountable.” He raised concerns about safety in the region, adding, “Children go to school in Ozoro, how can parents feel safe sending their daughters there if this is what is happening under the guise of a festival?”

The incident has drawn attention to sexual violence during community events in Nigeria. Ozoro, a town in the southern part of Delta State, hosts annual cultural festivals that draw local participation, but this year’s gathering was marred by the reported assaults. The timing during a month dedicated to women’s rights has intensified calls for justice and preventive measures.

As investigations continue, the arrests mark an initial step, but advocates stress the need for comprehensive accountability, including support for victims and systemic reforms. With public figures like Mr Jollof amplifying the issue, pressure mounts on authorities to ensure that such violations are addressed thoroughly. The case underscores the ongoing challenges in safeguarding women and girls during public celebrations, highlighting the imperative for robust enforcement of protections and community vigilance.

The Delta State government has not yet issued a detailed public statement, but the incident serves as a stark reminder of the work required to uphold human rights and dignity in all societal gatherings.
