PDP Collapse: Makinde Isolated in One-Man Governors Forum

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has claimed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is experiencing a significant collapse, leaving Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde as the sole remaining member of its governors’ forum.

In a statement, APC spokesman Seye Oladejo asserted that a wave of defections from the PDP to the APC has stripped the opposition party of its remaining credibility and structure. He specifically cited Governor Makinde’s isolated position, stating he now stands as the de facto chairman of a “one-man PDP Governors Forum,” which he described as evidence of the party’s deterioration.

According to Oladejo, the departure of governors and key stakeholders represents a direct loss of confidence in the PDP’s leadership and its inability to resolve internal crises. He argued that a party failing to maintain cohesion is unfit to govern Nigeria, calling the situation a “cautionary tale” for the nation’s democracy.

The statement also criticized the broader opposition for lacking discipline and strategic vision, contrasting it with the APC’s own approach during its time in opposition. The APC, it said, built legitimacy through resilience and clear policy, rather than opportunism.

The Lagos APC concluded by reiterating its focus on governance and democratic consolidation, suggesting that while opposition parties fracture, it remains committed to progressive administration.

The comment underscores the ongoing political realignment in Nigeria, where the PDP—once the dominant party—has seen multiple high-profile defections to the ruling APC. Observers note that the loss of governors severely weakens a party’s national coordination and electoral prowess, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape ahead of future elections. A credible and stable opposition is widely considered essential for a healthy democratic system.
