Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YOSIEC) has formally opened the nomination process for the state’s local government elections scheduled for June 6, 2026. The commission announced the commencement of sales for official candidate nomination forms, covering the posts of local government chairmen, vice-chairmen, and councillors.
In a press statement issued on its behalf by Permanent Member V, Kadai Maaji Jumbam, YOSIEC confirmed the move is in strict compliance with established electoral guidelines and operational regulations. The statement serves as the official notice to all registered political parties in the state.
The nomination form sale period is set from March 22 to March 31, 2026. Forms will be available exclusively at the YOSIEC office, located within the State Ministry of Works premises on Gashua Road, Damaturu. The commission specified the prescribed fees for each position: N300,000 for the chairmanship ticket, N250,000 for the vice-chairmanship, and N200,000 for councillorship seats.
Mr. Jumbam urged all political parties intending to participate to procure and submit their completed nomination forms within the designated timeframe. He emphasized that adherence to the schedule is mandatory and forms a critical part of the commission’s operational timetable leading to the polls.
This initial step activates the official electoral calendar for Yobe’s 2026 local government contests. The process underscores YOSIEC’s role in managing grassroots-level elections, which are fundamental to local governance and administrative accountability in Nigeria’s federal structure. Political parties are now expected to begin their internal candidate selection processes to meet the commission’s submission deadline.
The commission’s adherence to a transparent, rule-based commencement signals its intention to oversee a structured electoral process. Successful nomination and subsequent screening will determine which candidates appear on the ballot for the June 6 vote, a key event for democratic participation at the municipal level across Yobe State. All further directives, including campaign periods and polling procedures, will be communicated in line with the released guidelines.
