Lagos Power Outage: EKEDC says fire damaged Ibeju feeder

EKEDC Confirms Widespread Lagos Outage Following Lekki-Epe Expressway Fire

A significant power outage across parts of Lagos State has been confirmed by the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), resulting from a fire that extensively damaged critical transmission infrastructure along the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

In an official statement, EKEDC attributed the disruption to a road accident involving a moving vehicle and a stationary gas tanker. The collision triggered a fire that caused severe damage to the company’s 33 kilovolt (kV) power lines in the area.

The blaze specifically destroyed key conductors and overhead equipment on the Ibeju and Medallion 33kV feeders. This damage has severed the electricity supply to numerous communities served by these feeders.

“The current outage resulted from a fire incident last night after a vehicle collided with a stationary gas tanker,” the statement read. “The fire caused significant damage to the Ibeju and Medallion 33kV feeders, including essential conductors and overhead line equipment. Our technical teams are currently working to replace the affected components and restore supply as quickly and safely as possible. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience.”

Areas impacted include all communities linked to the Ibeju 33kV feeder, such as Eputu, Lagasa, Losoro, Kajola, Onisan, Sangotedo, Majek, Fidiso, Awoyaya, and Container. The Medallion feeder outage also affects the Medallion Company area. Residents in these locales have been urged to exercise caution while repair operations are ongoing.

This incident occurs just days after a separate gas explosion in the Ajah area on Saturday, which resulted in two fatalities and damaged properties near the Tera Ahmed bus stop in Sangotedo. While the two events are not directly linked, they underscore the vulnerability of utility infrastructure in densely populated urban corridors.

EKEDC has assured customers that power supply will be reinstated immediately upon the safe completion of the necessary repairs on the compromised lines. The company has not provided a specific timeline for full restoration.
