Sultan on Eid Calls for Nigeria Peace, Fair 2027 Elections

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has extended Eid-el-Fitr greetings to Nigerian Muslims and the global Islamic community following the conclusion of the 1447 AH Ramadan fast. In a statement issued through the Secretary-General of Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), which he leads as President-General, the Sultan urged the faithful to uphold the spiritual discipline and virtues cultivated during the holy month.

He called on Muslims to continue devotion beyond Ramadan, referencing Quranic verse 15:99 on worshipping until death. He also recommended observing the six-day voluntary Shawwal fast (Sittah-Shawwal), a practice aligned with the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). The Sultan prayed for Allah’s acceptance of all acts of worship performed during Ramadan and sought peace, stability, and prosperity for Nigeria and the world.

Turning to national matters, the Sultan appealed to Nigerians to intensify prayers for peace and unity as the country approaches the 2027 general elections. He urged stakeholders—including politicians, electoral bodies, and civil society—to ensure the polls are credible, free, fair, and transparent, stressing that national stability is foundational to good governance. “A stable Nigeria must first exist before it is governed,” he stated.

On global affairs, the Sultan appealed to world leaders to de-escalate ongoing conflicts, specifically mentioning heightened tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. He warned that prolonged wars have destructive ripple effects, potentially disrupting global food supplies and exacerbating economic hardship, with developing nations like Nigeria being particularly vulnerable.

As the spiritual head of Nigeria’s Muslims and a respected traditional ruler, the Sultan’s messages carry significant weight, blending religious guidance with socio-political commentary. His address underscores the intersection of faith, national development, and international diplomacy, calling on communities and leaders to prioritise peace and integrity at all levels. The Eid-el-Fitr celebration, which marks the end of Ramadan, began in Nigeria on Sunday following the sighting of the Shawwal moon.
