Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in Lagos on Sunday to provide President Bola Tinubu with a comprehensive briefing on the recent security situation in Maiduguri, Borno State. The visit follows an on-the-spot assessment directive from the president, during which the vice president evaluated the aftermath of multiple bomb explosions that struck the northeastern city.
According to reports, the coordinated attacks, suspected to be carried out by Boko Haram terrorists, resulted in significant casualties. The Borno Police Command confirmed 23 fatalities and 108 injuries. During his assessment trip, Vice President Shettima visited victims receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and met with affected families and community leaders. He is expected to detail these engagements and his overall findings to the president.
Following his briefing with President Tinubu, Vice President Shettima is scheduled to lead a delegation of serving governors for a separate meeting with the president on Sunday afternoon. This strategic gathering is intended to felicitate with President Tinubu on the occasion of Eid-el-Fitr while also focusing on enhancing inter-governmental collaboration. The discussion will address emerging security threats and aim to improve national rapid response mechanisms.
The vice president had previously assured Nigerians that the federal government would decisively confront the perpetrators. He disclosed that beyond President Tinubu’s directives to security chiefs, the administration is increasing investment in equipment and logistics to bolster the fight against terrorism nationwide. He condemned the attacks as barbaric, stating that no cause justifies the killing of innocent people.
These developments underscore the administration’s stated commitment to proactive engagement and continuous monitoring of security issues across the country. The series of meetings highlights a coordinated effort to evaluate the Maiduguri attacks, console victims, and formulate a unified governmental response to persistent security challenges.
