Davido Returns to African Music Post-Grammy, Praises SA Fans

Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Davido has declared his next creative phase will be defined by a deliberate return to his African roots, moving away from the Western-influenced sounds that have previously propelled his international success. Speaking on the Official UK Afrobeats Chart Show with host Eddie Kadi, the artist, whose real name is David Adeleke, reflected on a period of significant global accomplishment and outlined a new, more regionally focused musical direction.

Over the last three years, Davido has solidified his status as a global icon, highlighted by back-to-back Grammy nominations and sold-out arena tours across continents. He described this recent chapter as one where he has “performed everywhere” and achieved mainstream recognition in key international markets. However, he stated that having met these global benchmarks, his artistic focus is now shifting inward.

“This part of my career, I have performed everywhere, sold out every arena, I have been to three Grammys in the last three years,” Davido said. “The music that is coming next is very Davido, it is very African. We have done it so I am not really looking to really do western sounds.” This signals a conscious pivot toward producing what he termed “unapologetic African music,” suggesting future projects will prioritize authentic regional sounds and narratives over cross-continental fusion aimed primarily at foreign playlists.

A key pillar of his international fandom remains South Africa, a market where his influence is particularly pronounced. Davido asserted that “80 per cent” of South African citizens know his music, citing years of consistent engagement. This connection is built on a foundation of numerous collaborations with prominent South African artists and multiple music industry certifications from the country, demonstrating a sustained and commercially viable relationship with the region.

The artist’s announcement outlines a clear strategic evolution. After leveraging Western musical elements to achieve worldwide penetration, Davido now intends to consolidate his legacy by re-centering his African identity in his art. This move may resonate with a growing audience appetite for homegrown Afrobeats sounds and could influence broader industry trends. For fans, the next phase promises a refined, purist approach from an artist who has already mastered the global stage, suggesting his future work will be a direct reflection of his heritage without compromise.
