Chike’s Mother: Don’t Marry Without Financial Value

Nigerian afrobeat singer Chike has disclosed personal marital guidance from his mother, emphasising financial compatibility and individual responsibility as key factors in selecting a life partner.

Speaking on the recent ‘Ada’s Room’ podcast, the award-winning artist shared that his mother advised him to prioritise a partner’s economic stability and self-sufficiency. “My mum advised me never to settle down with a woman who doesn’t have a source of livelihood regardless of love,” Chike stated.

He elaborated that his mother’s counsel extended to a partner’s family context. “She also told me never to marry someone with the baggage of family responsibilities, especially a firstborn that is not productive,” he explained. The singer clarified that his mother viewed marrying someone from a financially strained background, where family members are dependent on the partner, as a potential long-term financial burden.

Chike, 33, confirmed he applies this philosophy personally. He stated he often assesses whether potential partners come from comfortable families and are themselves productive before pursuing a relationship. Extending the conversation beyond his personal life, he advised men to consider factors beyond physical attraction when entering relationships with marriage in mind.

The remarks highlight a traditional perspective on marital economics within some Nigerian family circles, where a partner’s financial independence and minimal familial dependencies are often deemed crucial for marital stability. While Chike presented this as his mother’s specific advice, such viewpoints frequently spark broader public discourse on the intersection of love, finance, and cultural expectations in modern relationships.

Chike’s career as a prominent musician in Nigeria’s thriving afrobeat scene provides a public platform for his personal views. The interview contributes to ongoing conversations about the practical considerations influencing partner selection in contemporary African societies.
