Abia State: Otti’s Compassionate Support for Accused Soldier

The Abia State Government has clarified that its earlier pledge of support to a Nigerian Army sergeant, now arrested for alleged fraud, was made solely on compassionate grounds after verifying his genuine need for assistance.

Sergeant Simon Amoke, attached to the Nigerian Army Engineers Corps in Lagos, was apprehended at Port Harcourt International Airport by troops from the 14 Brigade and 6 Division Provost units. Security sources stated the arrest followed intelligence linking him to multiple fraudulent activities, including an alleged attempt to flee to Abuja. Army investigations indicate Amoke deceived state officials by falsely claiming he was a key operative in a 2010 operation that killed a wanted gang leader, “Osisikankwu.” This claim led to his public recognition and a subsequent promise of financial and medical aid from the state government.

In a statement, Ferdinand Ekeoma, media aide to Governor Alex Otti, confirmed the governor’s promise was “purely on compassionate ground,” aligning with the administration’s policy of aiding citizens in distress. He cited examples of similar verified support extended to a naval personnel’s family after a fatal accident and an immigration officer’s family following his alleged killing.

Ekeoma explained that the government’s support was predicated on two verified facts: that Amoke had previously served in Abia State and had sustained an injury there, for which an NGO sought government medical assistance on his behalf. Upon later receiving information about the fraud allegations against him, the state government formally requested a due diligence check on the soldier. While the state lacks jurisdiction to probe corruption, this request may have precipitated the military operation that led to Amoke’s arrest shortly after he visited the governor.

The aide emphasized that the Abia State Government fully supports the Nigerian Army’s legitimate disciplinary actions against Amoke. However, it maintains its commitment to providing humanitarian support to verified victims of misfortune, separate from the ongoing legal process. The case underscores the complexities of vetting claims for public assistance and the government’s stated balance between compassion and accountability.
