Nwaiwu in Super Eagles after Bassey injury for Iran Jordan

Trabzonspor centre-back Chibuike Nwaiwu has received his first call-up to the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, as a replacement for the injured Calvin Bassey for forthcoming international friendlies against Iran and Jordan. The late change to the squad was confirmed following Bassey’s withdrawal due to a back injury sustained in club action.

Bassey, who plays for Fulham, picked up the injury during the English Premier League match against Burnley at Craven Cottage last weekend. His absence creates an opportunity for Nwaiwu, who has impressed during his inaugural season in Turkey’s Süper Lig.

The 22-year-old defender joined Trabzonspor in January from Austrian Bundesliga side Wolfsberger AC, where he had established himself as a regular. Since his move to the Black Sea coast, Nwaiwu has featured in ten league matches for Trabzonspor, scoring two goals and providing one assist. His physical presence and offensive contributions from defence have been noted during a campaign where Trabzonspor has competed in both domestic and European competitions.

Prior to his transfer to Turkey, Nwaiwu developed his career in Austria after progressing through the youth ranks. His performances for Wolfsberger AC attracted interest from several clubs, culminating in the move to one of Turkey’s most historic teams. This call-up marks a significant milestone, representing his first inclusion in a Nigeria senior squad.

The Super Eagles’ upcoming friendlies form part of preparations for future competitive fixtures, offering head coach José Peseiro an opportunity to assess defensive options beyond his regular starters. Bassey’s injury and Nwaiwu’s emergence highlight the depth being explored in central defence. Nwaiwu’s selection also underscores the increasing pathway for Nigerian talent within the Turkish Süper Lig, a league that has historically produced players for the national team.

Nwaiwu’s integration into the squad will be closely watched, as the team looks to build cohesion ahead of Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and the tournament itself. His experience in a physically demanding league, combined with his recent output for Trabzonspor, provides a fresh profile for the coaching staff to evaluate. The friendlies against Iran and Jordan present a platform for the debutant to stake a claim for a more regular role in the team’s future plans.
