Buffalo City Protests Over Igbo Coronation Spark Violence

Protests in Buffalo City, South Africa, escalated into violence on Monday after anti-immigrant groups demonstrated against the recent “coronation” of a Nigerian national as a local traditional leader. The unrest primarily targeted Somali-owned businesses, resulting in widespread looting and vehicle arson.

The demonstration, coordinated by Operation Dudula and the March and March movement, attracted participants from across the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Protesters marched from the waterfront to City Hall to oppose the appointment of Solomon Egbonna Eziko, a Nigerian man of Igbo descent, as a community “king.” Tensions intensified following reports that a marcher had been attacked. Accounts of the violence’s origin diverged: protest organizers claimed an immigrant stabbed a participant, while Somali merchants stated that individuals exited a taxi and began assaulting foreign nationals while demanding immigration documents.

The unrest quickly spread to commercial zones in KuGompo, where Somali-owned butcheries and retail shops were breached. Business owners reported that crowds stole inventory, damaged property, and ignited vehicles in the streets. Police confirmed ten vehicles were torched, though local journalists and merchants documented a higher figure. Several affected traders noted that both foreign and South African-owned vehicles sustained damage during the chaos.

Municipal and provincial officials swiftly condemned the unrest. Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality spokesperson Bongani Fuzile stated that the coronation proceeded without consulting recognized traditional authorities and described unilateral claims to local leadership as reckless. Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane emphasized that community frustrations do not justify property destruction, intimidation, or the erosion of the rule of law. In response to the escalating tensions, the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria advised citizens to suspend cultural gatherings, avoid protest sites, and prioritize personal safety. Law enforcement agencies have increased patrols in affected neighborhoods as investigations into the violence and property damage continue.
