Benue Rep Philip Agbese Defects From APC To Labour Party

Hon. Philip Agbese, the federal lawmaker representing the Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo constituency in Benue State, has formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and announced his defection to the Labour Party. Agbese, who currently serves as the deputy spokesperson of the House of Representatives, disclosed the political realignment on Tuesday through an official statement on his Facebook page.

In his announcement, Agbese described the transition as a response to a commitment to serve his constituents with sincerity, humility, and dedication. He stated that he has been welcomed by fellow Labour Party lawmakers serving in the National Assembly. Agbese also acknowledged the leadership of the party’s National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, citing her organizational approach as a factor in his decision to join.

Emphasizing his position as the highest-ranking Labour Party officeholder from Benue State, Agbese outlined a structured approach to strengthening the party’s operations in the region. He indicated that rebuilding efforts will prioritize inclusiveness, internal cohesion, and active participation from both longstanding members and recent recruits. The statement noted that party coordination will operate on mutual respect and a shared focus on electoral readiness across state and federal elections.

Political defections have remained a recurring feature of Nigeria’s parliamentary landscape, with representatives frequently shifting party affiliations during legislative terms. Agbese’s move from the APC, which controls the federal executive and holds a legislative majority, to the Labour Party reflects ongoing organizational adjustments among opposition blocs seeking to consolidate support. The Labour Party, which recorded notable legislative advances during the 2023 general elections, continues to develop its institutional presence across multiple geopolitical zones.

The House of Representatives will update its internal registry to reflect Agbese’s change in party affiliation once standard administrative procedures are completed. Party officials in Benue State have confirmed the transition and indicated that immediate coordination meetings will focus on aligning legislative outreach with national party directives. Agbese will maintain his seat and current committee assignments while operating under the Labour Party platform in Abuja.
