ICPC Returns El-Rufai To Custody After Court Hearing

The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) has returned former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai to custody, continuing a series of scheduled legal proceedings. The former governor’s re-detention follows a temporary release granted in late March after the passing of his mother.

El-Rufai was formally re-arraigned on Tuesday, appearing at the Kaduna State High Court to address a separate charge filed by the anti-graft agency. Court officials noted that proceedings were briefly paused when a second defendant listed in the case file failed to appear. The presiding judge adjourned the hearing to April 10, 2026, to allow time for proper representation and the attendance of all required parties.

Following the State High Court session, the former state leader was transferred to the Federal High Court in Kaduna, where legal counsel is expected to file his bail application. Prosecutors from the commission have confirmed they will respond to the petition according to standard judicial procedure. The agency’s broader investigative timeline remains unaffected, with multiple filings progressing through the established court docket.

El-Rufai was initially granted temporary administrative release on March 27, 2026, in accordance with standard humanitarian provisions for close family bereavement. His return to detention complies with court directives requiring defendants to remain accessible as pre-trial matters advance. Judicial practice in the region maintains that compassionate releases are procedural accommodations rather than substantive conclusions to pending charges.

The Federal High Court will review the latest detention application and issue a ruling based on statutory guidelines and submitted evidence. Court staff have indicated that the determination will outline the immediate conditions of El-Rufai’s pre-trial status. Attention will subsequently return to the Kaduna State High Court on April 10, where prosecutors and defense attorneys will resume submissions as the commission’s cases move forward through the judicial calendar.
