Michael Aondoakaa, former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, has returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating that the move is intended to advance economic development and security reforms in Benue State.
During a Wednesday broadcast on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Aondoakaa addressed questions regarding his political realignment. He clarified that his decision to rejoin the opposition party is unrelated to the activities of Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia or Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume. Aondoakaa described the defection as a political homecoming, noting that he previously served as Attorney-General under a PDP-led federal administration.
The former justice minister outlined a policy agenda centered on rural infrastructure and food security. He indicated that increased federal revenue allocations to Benue State, resulting from President Bola Tinubu’s recent fiscal adjustments, would be directed toward improving agricultural systems, housing, and basic community services. Aondoakaa also referenced his intention to align state development initiatives with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
A key component of his proposed agenda involves the full implementation of existing security and land management legislation. Aondoakaa emphasized the need to activate all applicable state and federal statutes, with specific attention given to enforcing Benue’s anti-open grazing law to safeguard farming communities and agricultural land. He added that effective deployment of available resources would require strict adherence to these legal frameworks.
The defection highlights continued political realignments across Nigeria’s North Central region as major parties strengthen their grassroots networks. Aondoakaa is expected to finalize formal party registration processes while preparing a comprehensive policy framework addressing Benue State’s rural development, security infrastructure, and agricultural priorities.
