Oyo Speaker Ogundoyin Declares Ambition to Succeed Makinde in 2027

Oyo State House of Assembly Speaker Adebowale Ogundoyin has declared himself the most suitable candidate to succeed Governor Seyi Makinde in 2027, citing his experience, leadership track record, and commitment to continuity.

Ogundoyin made the declaration during a meeting with prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftains and leaders from Ibadan at the party’s secretariat on Tuesday. The gathering included Deputy Chairman of PDP Wasiu Adeleke, Chief Nureni Akanbi, Chief Ismaila Ashipa, Remi Ayoade, PDP South West Women Leader Alhaja Modinat Adedibu, and Commissioner for Women Affairs Mrs Toyin Balogun.

Accompanying Ogundoyin were influential PDP figures from the Ibarapa geopolitical zone, including member representing Ibarapa North/Central Hon Peter Ojedokun, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters Hon Ademola Ojo, former House of Representatives member Yemi Taiwo, former Commissioner for Information and Culture Hon Moses Ojoawo, former Commissioner for Local Government Hon Funmilayo Orisadeyi, and former Commissioner for Environment Alh Majekodunmi Aborode.

Speaking to the gathering, Ogundoyin emphasised the need for continuity, innovation, and collective responsibility in advancing the achievements of the current administration. He positioned his ambition as rooted in service, capacity, and a proven record of leadership.

“I have come to consult, to listen, and to seek your support as critical stakeholders of our great party,” Ogundoyin stated. “Together, we can build on the progress already achieved by our amiable Governor, Engr Seyi Makinde, and take Oyo State to greater heights.”

Ogundoyin, who represents Ibarapa East State constituency in the State House of Assembly, has been Speaker since 2019 and is regarded as one of the youngest presiding officers in Nigeria’s recent history. His declaration marks a significant step in what is expected to be a competitive race for the PDP governorship ticket in the 2027 elections.

Political analysts note that Ogundoyin’s early positioning and engagement with key party stakeholders from Ibadan, the state capital and political powerhouse, demonstrates strategic planning ahead of the primaries. His emphasis on continuity aligns with Governor Makinde’s achievements in infrastructure development, education, and healthcare across Oyo State.

The Speaker’s declaration has generated discussions within the PDP about succession planning and the party’s strategy to maintain its hold on the state beyond 2027.
