Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and a governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, has formally briefed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on her political ambitions.
The meeting, held privately at the president’s Lagos residence, focused on Obasanjo’s intention to contest the governorship of Ogun State. During the discussion, she outlined her vision for the state, emphasising priorities in governance, development, and public service should she be elected into office.
Obasanjo reflected on her long-standing relationship with President Tinubu, describing it as one built over years of political engagement and mutual respect. She noted that this relationship has shaped her political journey and informed her approach to leadership.
“On Monday in Lagos, I had the privilege of meeting His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Obasanjo said. “Our conversation was insightful and forward-looking, focusing on leadership, governance, and the ongoing development of our nation and Ogun State.”
The former commissioner reaffirmed her loyalty to the ruling party and pledged to actively mobilise support for President Tinubu ahead of the next general election. The meeting is seen by observers as part of ongoing political consultations and alignments ahead of future electoral contests in Ogun State and at the national level.
Political analysts suggest that Obasanjo’s engagement with the president underscores her strategic positioning within the APC as the party prepares for the 2027 elections. Her visit also highlights the importance of securing endorsements from key party figures in Ogun State, a critical battleground in Nigerian politics.
Obasanjo’s candidacy adds to a growing list of aspirants vying for the Ogun State governorship under the APC. Her background as the daughter of a former president and her experience in public service are expected to bolster her campaign as she seeks to secure the party’s nomination and ultimately win the state’s top political office.
