Oyo APC Chieftains Reject Local Government Congress Results
Oyo State APC leaders in Lagelu Local Government Area have formally rejected the outcome of the party’s recent local government congress, alleging that the process was marred by imposition and manipulation.
In a petition addressed to the state party chairman and obtained by Media Talk Africa on Wednesday, prominent APC chieftains accused certain individuals of orchestrating the imposition of candidates for various executive positions in the area. The petition was signed by seven key party figures representing multiple wards, including Chief Ajuwon James Olusegun (Ward 2), Chief Mrs Jemilat Adesina Ajimobi (Ward 4), and Alhaji Chazali Remi Ajani (Ward 1).
The leaders described the congress outcome as a deliberate attempt to destabilize the party structure in Lagelu. They noted that a harmonized list of executive members, agreed upon by stakeholders across 14 wards to promote unity, was unjustly overturned in favor of an imposed list.
“We categorically reject any form of imposition of party executives by any elected official,” the petition stated. “The autonomy of the party at the grassroots must be respected, and the voices of genuine party leaders within Lagelu Local Government must not be silenced.”
The signatories demanded an immediate review of the congress results, recognition of the authentic harmonized list approved by the national headquarters in Abuja, and strict implementation of the approved ward executive lists. They also called for a clear directive from state leadership prohibiting individual imposition of party executives.
The petition warned that continued disregard for due process could have serious consequences for the APC’s electoral prospects in Lagelu, urging state leadership to act swiftly in the interest of justice, fairness, and unity.
When contacted, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Sadare, acknowledged awareness of grievances in some local government areas. He assured that the party is working to resolve the issues through established mechanisms, urging affected members to exercise patience.
The development highlights ongoing tensions within the Oyo State APC following local government congresses, with implications for party cohesion ahead of future electoral contests.
