North Korea Tests Electromagnetic Weapons, Carbon Fiber Bombs, Air Defense Systems

North Korea has conducted a series of advanced weapons tests, showcasing new capabilities including electromagnetic systems, carbon fiber bombs, and mobile air defense systems, according to state news agency KCNA.

The tests, overseen by General Kim Jong Sik, took place over three days. Kim described the electromagnetic weapon and carbon fiber bombs as “special assets” in the country’s arsenal, though details remain limited. South Korea’s military detected several missile launches from North Korean territory, with projectiles traveling between 240 and 700 kilometers, Reuters reported.

The carbon fiber bombs, referred to as “blackout” weapons, are designed to release conductive graphite-filled filaments over power grids and plants, causing short circuits. The non-nuclear electromagnetic pulse (EMP) weapon aims to disable electronic circuits in military assets such as radar systems and aircraft. KCNA also reported tests involving a new cluster warhead for the Hwasong-11, a nuclear-capable ballistic missile.

The tests come amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula. Jang Kum Chol, North Korea’s first deputy foreign minister, labeled South Korea as the North’s “most hostile enemy state” in a statement on Tuesday. Earlier this week, Seoul apologized to Pyongyang over drone incursions into North Korean territory, denying official involvement and attributing the launches to private actors. Three individuals—including an employee of South Korea’s National Intelligence Service, a military officer, and a graduate student—are facing charges.

Relations between the two Koreas have been largely frozen since 2019, following the collapse of nuclear negotiations between Pyongyang and Washington during U.S. President Donald Trump’s first term. Last month, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un stated that a nuclear arsenal capable of posing a credible threat to the U.S. is the only leverage against American “terrorism and aggression.” He also affirmed that Pyongyang would not relinquish its nuclear weapons and would resist any efforts to challenge its status.

The latest tests underscore North Korea’s continued focus on advancing its military capabilities amid ongoing regional tensions.
