Global Smartphone Shipments Decline as Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo Report Year-on-Year Drop

Global smartphone shipments have declined in the latest reporting period, with major manufacturers including Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo all experiencing year-on-year decreases, according to new data from market research firm Counterpoint. The drop reflects ongoing challenges in the global mobile market, including economic headwinds, supply chain disruptions, and shifting consumer demand.

The smartphone industry has faced mounting pressure as inflation and economic uncertainty weigh on consumer spending, particularly in key markets such as Europe and Asia. While flagship models from Apple and Samsung continue to attract premium buyers, overall volumes have been impacted by slower upgrade cycles and increased competition in the mid-range segment.

Apple, despite maintaining a strong brand presence and customer loyalty, reported a slight decline in shipments compared to the same period last year. Samsung, the world’s largest smartphone vendor by volume, also saw a reduction, attributed in part to intensified competition in emerging markets and a saturated high-end segment.

Chinese manufacturers Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo, which have expanded rapidly in recent years, were not immune to the downturn. These brands, which have relied heavily on growth in regions such as India and Southeast Asia, faced headwinds from both local competition and macroeconomic factors.

Counterpoint’s analysis suggests that while the overall market contracted, there are pockets of resilience. Foldable devices and 5G-enabled handsets continue to show growth potential, though they remain a small share of total shipments. Additionally, some manufacturers are focusing on diversifying revenue streams through services and ecosystem integration to offset hardware sales declines.

Industry analysts note that the current slowdown may prompt further consolidation and strategic shifts among smartphone makers. Companies are likely to double down on innovation, supply chain efficiency, and market-specific strategies to regain momentum in the coming quarters.

The decline in global smartphone shipments underscores the evolving dynamics of the mobile industry, as manufacturers navigate a complex landscape shaped by economic pressures, technological advancements, and changing consumer preferences.
