The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise. The decision followed a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on Friday, April 10.
After deliberations, the Commission resolved to delay the exercise until after the 2027 General Election. A statement signed by INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, described the voter revalidation as a critical component of the Commission’s mandate to maintain a credible and up-to-date National Register of Voters.
The exercise was designed to verify and review existing voter records, ensure the accuracy of personal data, eliminate duplicate and ineligible entries, and strengthen the overall integrity of the voter register. It also aimed to provide registered voters with an opportunity to confirm their details and make necessary corrections.
INEC reiterated its commitment to conducting free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections. The postponement is expected to allow the Commission to focus on immediate electoral priorities while ensuring the revalidation process is implemented effectively in the long term.
