General Chris Eze (Rtd) was elected Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Enugu State on Saturday, alongside other members of the party’s State Working Committee. The election, held at a party congress in Enugu, marks a significant development for the ADC as it seeks to strengthen its presence in the state ahead of future elections.
Eze, a former State Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Nigerian Ambassador to India, brings extensive political experience to his new role. In his acceptance speech on behalf of the newly elected executive, he pledged to run an inclusive administration that would engage all party members in its activities. He also assured aspirants of a fair and transparent process during the forthcoming party primaries in the state.
Other key officials elected during the congress include Prince Acharabuagu Kingsley as Vice Chairman for Enugu North Zone and Lolo Queen N. Nwankwo as State Organising Secretary. The newly elected leadership has expressed its commitment to repositioning the ADC as a formidable political force in Enugu State.
In a statement issued by Comrade Adolphus Udeh, Eze declared that the ADC is positioning itself “to take over power in Enugu State in the 2027 general elections, with a vision to establishing a people-oriented and grassroots-driven government capable of delivering democratic dividends.” This ambitious goal reflects the party’s determination to challenge the dominance of other political parties in the state.
However, the election process was not without controversy. Reports indicate that factional congresses took place in Enugu State, raising questions about the legitimacy of the outcomes. Such divisions could pose challenges for the party as it seeks to unify its base and present a cohesive front in future electoral contests.
The ADC’s leadership change comes at a critical time for the party, which has struggled to gain significant traction in Enugu State’s political landscape. With Eze at the helm, the party aims to build a stronger grassroots network and appeal to a broader spectrum of voters. The success of these efforts will likely depend on the party’s ability to address internal divisions and present a clear, compelling vision for governance.
As the 2027 general elections approach, the ADC’s performance in Enugu State will be closely watched by political analysts and stakeholders. The party’s ability to consolidate its leadership and mobilize support will be key factors in determining its prospects in the state’s competitive political environment.
