Comedian Basketmouth’s ex-wife, Elsie Okpocha, has issued a legal warning against individuals and media outlets spreading false claims about the breakdown of their marriage. In a letter released through her legal representatives, Primeview Legal, Okpocha denied allegations of paternity fraud and cautioned the public to refrain from publishing “false and unfounded” reports.
Media Talk Africa reports that the couple married in November 2010 and publicly announced their separation in December 2022. Basketmouth, whose real name is Bright Okpocha, stated in an Instagram post that the decision followed extensive deliberations between the two. However, controversy erupted last month when a blog claimed that the comedian had revealed during an interview that DNA test results of their first child prompted the divorce.
Okpocha’s legal team described the reports as defamatory and an invasion of privacy. The letter emphasized the potential psychological harm such misinformation could cause their son, warning that “innocent members of the public may take such publications as the true state of things in the marriage and begin to bully their son on and off social media spaces with the consequential psychological trauma that will be inflicted on him.”
She has threatened legal action against any individual or platform found disseminating the false narrative, underscoring the seriousness with which she views the matter. The dispute highlights the broader issue of how unverified claims about high-profile relationships can fuel online harassment and misinformation.
