Activist Aisha Yesufu has joined the growing chorus of Nigerians demanding the resignation of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman Joash Amupitan. Yesufu cited Amupitan’s perceived partisan conduct as the primary reason for her call, describing it as a matter of necessity rather than choice.
In a post on X, the member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) emphasized that the opposition party is committed to serious political engagement and cannot tolerate what she described as partisan interference in electoral processes. “My party is not here to play,” she wrote, underlining the urgency of the matter.
Yesufu also reflected on the increasing civic engagement among Nigerians, describing it as a series of “little wins” that could lead to broader political change. She noted that in previous years, Amupitan’s actions might have gone unchallenged, but the current climate of active citizenship has made such accountability possible.
The activist expressed personal disappointment at being unable to attend her party’s first convention due to prior commitments to a workshop in Brazil. Nonetheless, she reaffirmed her support for the #AmupitanMustGo campaign, which has gained traction among opposition figures and civil society actors.
The controversy surrounding Amupitan comes amid heightened scrutiny of Nigeria’s electoral body, with critics accusing it of bias and lack of transparency. Calls for leadership changes at INEC have intensified, particularly from opposition parties seeking to ensure fairness in future elections.
As the debate continues, the pressure on INEC and its leadership is expected to grow, with activists and political stakeholders closely watching the commission’s next steps.
