Wike Urges Political Allies to Support Late Senator Mpigi’s Family

Political leaders across Rivers State have called for concrete support for the family of the late Senator Barinada Barry Mpigi, urging associates to move beyond symbolic gestures and demonstrate tangible commitment to those he left behind. The appeal came during a Night of Tribute held in Port Harcourt on Thursday, honoring the lawmaker who passed away in London on February 19, 2026, at the age of 64.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, emphasized that ceremonial condolences were insufficient without sustained action to assist the late senator’s dependents. Wike recalled Mpigi’s unwavering loyalty during challenging political periods, noting his significant contributions to legislative effectiveness and political stability in Rivers State.

The late senator’s dedication to the Ogoni people was a recurring theme throughout the tributes. Wike highlighted Mpigi’s instrumental role in establishing the Federal University of Environment and Technology, Ogoni, describing it as a lasting legacy that would continue to benefit the region for generations.

Tony Okocha, chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, described Mpigi as a refined and deeply committed politician whose death represented a painful loss to the entire political family. His characterization of Mpigi as both sophisticated and dedicated resonated with many attendees who had worked alongside the late senator across party lines.

Ambassador-Designate to the Republic of Ireland, Chief OCJ Okocha, SAN, acknowledged Mpigi’s role in facilitating his Senate confirmation as ambassador. This personal testimony illustrated the senator’s willingness to support colleagues’ advancement, even when it meant helping members of rival political parties.

Ferdinand Alabraba, chairman of the Rivers State Elders Council, portrayed Mpigi as a voice of reason and a seasoned legislative figure who combined firmness of conviction with generosity of spirit. “Barry’s demise leaves a vacuum that will not be easily filled,” Alabraba stated. “He was humble, firm in conviction, and generous in spirit. His life was a testament to service to his constituents, Rivers State, and Nigeria.”

The tribute event drew numerous dignitaries from across the political spectrum, reflecting Mpigi’s ability to build bridges and maintain relationships beyond partisan divisions. Several speakers emphasized how the late senator’s approach to politics—marked by principle, consistency, and genuine concern for his constituents—set a standard that current and future leaders should aspire to emulate.

As Rivers State continues to mourn the loss of one of its prominent political figures, the calls for concrete support to his family underscore the recognition that honoring a public servant’s legacy extends beyond words to meaningful action that sustains the wellbeing of those closest to him.
