Slate Auto Unveils $20K Customizable EV Pickup Truck

Slate Auto: The Jeff Bezos-Backed EV Startup Challenging the Industry

In April 2025, Slate Auto emerged from stealth mode to disrupt the automotive industry with a bold promise: an ultra-affordable, customizable electric pickup truck starting at under $20,000. Backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter, the Michigan-based startup had operated in secrecy for three years from Troy—situated in the heart of America’s traditional auto manufacturing hub.

TechCrunch first revealed Slate’s existence on April 8, detailing its unconventional business model and the involvement of Bezos. The startup’s approach stood in stark contrast to industry norms, focusing on a deeply customizable electric vehicle that would leverage aftermarket parts expertise from former Harley-Davidson and Chrysler employees.

The company’s pickup truck prototype began appearing publicly in California weeks later, generating buzz on social media and automotive forums. Slate demonstrated the vehicle’s “Transformer-like” modular capabilities, showing how the same base platform could be configured as different body styles including SUVs and hatchbacks.

At its official launch event in Long Beach on April 24, Slate unveiled a deliberately minimalist base model featuring just 150 miles of range, manual windows, and no infotainment screen. The company positioned this bare-bones approach as a foundation for extensive customization, allowing buyers to personalize everything from seating configurations to the vehicle’s silhouette.

Production plans centered on a former 1.4-million-square-foot printing plant in Warsaw, Indiana, which had sat dormant for approximately two years. The facility’s conversion represented Slate’s commitment to domestic manufacturing despite the challenges facing EV startups.

Consumer response proved immediate and substantial. Within two weeks of opening refundable $50 reservations, Slate surpassed 100,000 bookings. By December 2025, that figure exceeded 150,000, demonstrating strong market appetite for affordable electric vehicles even as the broader EV sector faced headwinds including bankruptcies and failed launches.

However, the startup encountered its first major obstacle in July 2025 when the Trump administration’s tax-cut legislation eliminated the $7,500 federal EV tax credit effective September 2025. This change forced Slate to abandon its “under $20,000” pricing claim, though the company maintained that its vehicle would remain significantly cheaper than competing electric pickups.

In a surprising leadership change on March 9, 2026, Slate appointed former Amazon Marketplace vice president Peter Faricy as CEO, replacing founding CEO Chris Barman, who transitioned to “President of Vehicles.” The move signaled the company’s shift from development to commercialization as it prepared for production launch by year’s end.

With traditional automakers scaling back EV investments and few competitors targeting the low end of the market, Slate positioned itself to capitalize on what it identified as a significant gap in affordable electric transportation. The startup’s success or failure could prove pivotal for the future of accessible electric vehicles in the United States.
