Tambuwal Accuses Tinubu of Weakening Opposition Parties

Former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of orchestrating efforts to destabilise opposition parties ahead of future elections. Speaking to journalists on Saturday night following the African Democratic Congress (ADC) state congress in Sokoto, Tambuwal claimed the administration is deliberately fuelling internal crises in rival parties to strengthen the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He warned that Nigeria risks sliding toward one-party dominance, drawing parallels with the political climate under former military ruler Sani Abacha, when parties coalesced behind a single candidate. Tambuwal alleged government interference in opposition parties such as the Labour Party and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to weaken their structures and electoral viability.

“This is reminiscent of the era when all political parties aligned behind a single candidate,” he said, cautioning that such developments pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic framework.

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives also criticised the current administration’s handling of the economy and security, citing rising poverty, unemployment, and persistent insecurity as key challenges facing the country.

Despite these concerns, Tambuwal expressed confidence in the ADC as a credible alternative capable of steering Nigeria away from what he described as misrule. He outlined the party’s priorities, including national security, economic recovery, job creation, and investments in education, agriculture, and stable power supply.

Tambuwal reaffirmed the ADC’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s multi-party system, stressing that it must be safeguarded at all costs. He also commended party members for their large turnout and peaceful conduct during the state congress, highlighting internal unity as a foundation for the party’s future efforts.

The allegations add to ongoing political tensions in Nigeria, where opposition parties have repeatedly accused the ruling APC of leveraging state power to undermine rivals. As the country approaches future electoral cycles, concerns over political fairness and democratic consolidation remain central to national discourse.
