APC Stakeholders Back Murtala Sule Garo for Kano Deputy Governor

Kano — The Chairman of the House of Representatives Downstream Petroleum Committee, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, has provided new details on the selection process that led to the nomination of Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo as the preferred candidate for Deputy Governor of Kano State.

In a statement released on Sunday, Doguwa praised Governor Abba Yusuf for ceding his constitutional authority to the legacy wing of the former All Progressives Congress (APC) to nominate a replacement for the resigned Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo. He described the governor’s decision as “unprecedented” and a gesture of political maturity aimed at fostering unity within the party.

Doguwa noted that Governor Yusuf not only allowed the legacy group, led by Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to nominate the deputy governor but also allocated several vacant government positions, including three commissioner slots, to members of the group.

During a stakeholders’ meeting chaired by Ganduje, Doguwa said 27 out of 31 attendees supported Garo’s nomination. He cited several reasons for the consensus: Garo was the party’s deputy gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 general election, enjoys widespread support across Kano’s 44 local government areas, and hails from the same federal constituency as the former deputy governor, ensuring regional balance.

While the group agreed to submit three names to the governor in compliance with his directive, Doguwa indicated that the additional two were “shadow nominees” or “space holders,” with Garo being the substantive choice.

He urged Governor Yusuf to accept the popular decision of the legacy members and pledged continued support for the administration in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.

The development marks a significant moment in Kano’s political dynamics, highlighting efforts to bridge divides between former APC and current ruling party factions.
