Fela Kuti Makes History as First African Inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, the Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer, has become the first African artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The announcement was made during a broadcast of American Idol in the United States, marking a historic milestone for African music on the global stage.

Fela will be honoured in the Early Influence category alongside Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, country rocker Gram Parsons, and Cuban singer Celia Cruz. Nigerian-born British singer Sade Adu will be inducted in the Performance category. Other high-profile nominees, including Shakira, Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, New Edition, and Pink, did not make the final selection.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s selection process involved more than 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals casting votes to determine the honourees. The induction ceremony is scheduled for 14 November at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.

Fela’s recognition follows another historic achievement earlier this year, when he became the first African musician to receive the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Known for his politically charged lyrics, complex rhythms, and fearless activism, Fela’s influence extends far beyond music, shaping cultural and political discourse across the African continent and beyond.

This latest honour cements his legacy as one of the most transformative figures in global music history.
