Putin meets Congo’s Sassou Nguesso in Kremlin for boost

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with President Denis Sassou Nguesso of the Republic of Congo at the Kremlin on Wednesday to discuss the expansion of bilateral cooperation. Putin highlighted a range of sectors in which both countries see “promising” opportunities, including geological exploration, energy, logistics, agriculture and other economic fields.

The Russian leader congratulated Sassou Nguesso on securing a fifth term in the presidential election held last month. The Kremlin spokesperson noted that Congo’s stable political environment creates “good business prospects” for Russian investors.

Sassou Nguesso, 82, was re‑elected with nearly 95 % of the vote, an outcome that opposition parties have denounced as lacking credibility. Several opposition figures were imprisoned or in exile, and some parties chose to boycott the vote. Despite these domestic tensions, the Congolese president told Putin that “all the conditions” are in place to implement joint projects successfully.

Both leaders reaffirmed that the long‑standing friendship, solidarity and cooperation between Russia and the Republic of Congo extend across security, defence and economic domains. Putin praised Congo’s support for Russian positions on the international stage and extended an invitation to President Sassou Nguesso to attend the third Russia‑Africa Forum, scheduled for later this year.

The meeting underscores Moscow’s strategic interest in deepening ties with African partners amid a broader push to expand Russian presence on the continent. For Congo, the prospect of increased Russian investment aligns with its goal of diversifying the economy and modernising key infrastructure sectors.

Future cooperation will likely focus on joint ventures in mining and energy, as well as transport corridors that could enhance Congo’s export capacity. The upcoming Russia‑Africa Forum will provide a platform for further dialogue and the signing of concrete agreements, marking another step in the evolving partnership between the two nations.
