The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Diocese on the Niger has suspended priest Ifunanya Maduka for six months without pay following allegations of staged prophetic activities.
In a letter dated 27 April 2026, Bishop Owen Nwokolo announced the suspension of Maduka, who served as Vicar of St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Nteje, Anambra State. The diocese said the action was taken after “credible and verifiable reports” indicated that Maduka orchestrated and manipulated prophecies by involving individuals he allegedly induced or paid, presenting the events as genuine divine manifestations.
According to the bishop’s communiqué, Maduka was confronted with the evidence and admitted to the practice. The letter stated: “It has come to our attention, with deep sadness and grave concern, that you have been involved in practices grossly unbecoming of an ordained Priest of the Anglican Church… When you were confronted with the evidence made available to us, you admitted your involvement in the said unholy practice.”
The diocese deemed the conduct a serious breach of Anglican discipline and ethical standards. It highlighted concerns about false prophecy, deception of worshippers and the potential for financial gain obtained under false pretences. The actions were described as bringing disrepute to the Church and violating Christian doctrine.
As part of the suspension, Maduka has been instructed to surrender all church property and responsibilities to the People’s Warden and vacate the church premises within four days. The diocese also announced that a disciplinary panel will be formed within one month to conduct a further investigation and consider any additional sanctions in accordance with church regulations.
The suspension underscores the Anglican hierarchy’s commitment to maintaining doctrinal integrity and protecting congregants from misleading practices. The outcome of the forthcoming disciplinary panel will determine whether further action, including possible removal from holy orders, will be taken.
