Trump assassination attempt: Allen fires on Secret Service

Cole Tomas Allen, a 31‑year‑old California resident, has been charged with attempting to assassinate U.S. President Donald Trump after an incident at the Washington Hilton on 30 April 2026. The U.S. Department of Justice released high‑definition, sound‑less CCTV footage that shows Allen walking through a hallway, bypassing a metal‑detector screening area, and confronting security personnel with a shotgun. A Secret Service officer responded with his sidearm, and Allen was subsequently tackled and restrained before he could reach the ballroom where the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was being held.

The Washington Hilton was hosting the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, an event attended by President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, senior White House officials and journalists. According to the DOJ, a Secret Service officer wearing a bullet‑proof vest was hit once in the chest during the exchange of gunfire. The officer survived the wound and the incident was contained without further casualties.

Investigators recovered a handwritten manifesto left by Allen. While the document does not name President Trump directly, it denounces the president’s policies and accuses him of being a “pedophile, rapist, and traitor.” The manifesto outlines Allen’s motivation to act against what he described as a corrupt administration.

Law enforcement officials have confirmed that Allen was subdued by security staff and detained on the scene. He was subsequently transferred to a federal detention facility where he faces multiple federal charges, including attempted murder of a federal officer and unlawful use of a firearm. A court appearance is scheduled for early May, and prosecutors have indicated that the case will proceed under the U.S. federal criminal justice system.

The incident has prompted a review of security protocols for high‑profile events in Washington, D.C. The Secret Service, in coordination with the Department of Justice, has indicated that additional measures will be implemented to strengthen screening procedures and response capabilities at venues hosting government officials.

The Washington Hilton attack underscores ongoing concerns about domestic threats to public officials and highlights the challenges of securing large, public gatherings. Authorities continue to monitor potential extremist activity and urge the public to report any suspicious behavior. Further updates will be provided as the legal proceedings develop.
